Hello beautiful people
! hopefully you’ve all had lovely weekends! I went out for dinner to celebrate my sister Kate’s birthday Friday night, and yesterday Carmen and I went to see the new Jurassic World movie which was incredible! Chris Pratt is such a babe.
Recently, a friend of mine asked me to recommend her some products from the drugstore, which got me to thinking that a drugstore starter kit would make a great post!
If you’re just starting out with makeup, I think this is a great way to play around with amazing products that don’t break the bank, but they’re also great products if you’re a pro!
Obviously you don’t need to buy all of these products at once, or use every single one of them, but these are my favourite budget friendly make up items.
Some of these categories will have one or two products in them depending what kind of look you would be going for, but every single one of them is great quality and will allow you to achieve beautiful make up every day.
The Rimmel lasting finish foundation is a beautiful medium to full coverage foundation! It’s available in quite a few shades and is less than $10. I would say this is a natural matte finish, it allows some radiance to come through, but not enough that you look out right shiny, it also blends onto the skin seamlessly, without creasing or sitting in your pores. If you wanted a more sheer coverage, you can always add a bit of your favourite moisturizer to this baby and it would still look gorgeous!
This category has two products for me, one for blemishes/redness/spots and one for under eye brightening and covering dark circles.
For spots, I LOVE the collection lasting perfection concealer (Thanks Becca!) I realize this isn’t available in Canada, but I had to put this in here because it’s just the best. (The Maybelline fit me is a good one too)
The collection concealer literally doesn’t budge all day, and even though it’s a full coverage concealer, it’s surprisingly creamy and easy to blend. If you can somehow get your hands on this, I would 100% recommend it.
For under eye circles I love the Maybelline age rewind concealer, this brightens like no other drugstore concealer! It doesn’t crease and it makes you look awake and radiant even if you’ve been awake all night! It has a very light consistency, so I wouldn’t use this anywhere but the eye area as it could draw attention to blemishes.
For contour and highlight, I’m a big fan of the Sleek contour kit. Again, something you can’t get in Canada, but they do ship internationally from their website, so it’s not impossible to get your hands on. The bronzer this kit comes with is a matte brown, with quite a muddy undertone as opposed to an orange or red one, and the highlight is a beautiful champagne shade that would look beautiful on any skin tone!
For bronzing in general I really like the Rimmel natural bronzer, which does have quite a golden-orange undertone but still look very natural on the skin. It has TINY particles of shimmer in, which gives your skin a very subtle and healthy glow.
Maybelline takes the cake for me in this category!
If you want a really subtle addition of colour to your brows, you can’t go wrong with the Brow Drama tinted brow gel. It adds definition and colour to your existing brows without having to fill them in, plus it keeps them in place all day. I use this by itself on days where I’m going for a more natural look, but you could also use it on tip of a powder or a pencil.
To fill your brows in with a pencil, I would suggest the Maybelline Define-a-Brow pencil. The nib is so small you can actually draw in little hairs; it reminds me quite a lot of the Anastasia Brow-wiz except for the fact that the spooly on the Maybelline one is a bit useless.
Rimmel stay blushed cream blushes are my favourite from the drugstore, because you can use them as a blush and a lip product, so it’s really a 2 for 1 kind of deal. The tube is quite large and you only need a tiny amount to blend onto your cheeks, so it will last you a long time. These have a really nice amount of pigmentation, and because it’s a cream product, you can always build it up to be bolder! They blend really well onto the skin, and stay put all day long.
Nothing beats the Rimmel stay matte powder! It’s really finely milled, so it feels nice and soft on the skin without looking too cakey, it’s got a very natural finish while still reducing shine.
Recently I would have said I wasn’t a huge fan of drug store eye shadow palettes, they just don’t compare with high end, that is until I bought the L’Oreal La Palette Nude 1.
This palette is a little bit pricey for drugstore, but it’s still half the price of a naked palette. It comes with 10 shades, some shimmery and some matte, and I have to say I love them all! They are soft and buttery, they blend well and they allow you to create any kind of look you want! The brush that comes with the palette is garbage, but other than that, this has a big thumbs up from me.
Nothing beats the Maybelline colour tattoos; they have a gorgeous range of shades that you can use on their own or as a base. I love using these on their own because they’re so fast and easy, and give the most beautiful effect on the lid, they have shimmery shades and matte ones, some light ones and some dark ones; so you can really play around and achieve some pretty looks.
I would say Mascara is the one thing not to waste your money on with a high end one, because the drug store has SO MANY good ones! My favourite at the moment is the Covergirl Full Lash Bloom, because it separates my lashes nicely and it adds just the right amount of volume for every day wear.
Now, I realize I didn’t choose a drug store liquid liner, but that’s only because I have never found anything that compares to my Kat Von D Tattoo Liner.
I would say the drugstore has the best range of lip products that compare to high end ones, which made this category the hardest for me.
I would have to go with the Rimmel Kate Moss lipsticks, they have the most amazing colour pay off and they don’t sit in the lines of your lips or anything. They have a great range of shades, but the bold ones in particular are my favourite.
The Revlon Colourburst lip glosses are the best, again they have a good range of shades and the formulation is amazing! It’s not sticky at all; it’s very moisturizing and thin so you don’t feel like you’re wearing a layer of wax on your lips.
Last but not least are Brushes!
Real Techniques without question are the best quality brushes on the market at the drugstore. They’re super soft and easy to clean, and they provide a brush for every single need you could possibly have. You can buy the brushes in core kits for less than $20 or you can buy some of them individually for less than $10! I find myself reaching for these more than some of my high end brushes sometimes! Definitely a worthy investment!
That’s it for my drugstore starter kit! Let me know if you use any of these, or what some of your products would be!
Until next time,
